Principal Jamaal Camah ’96

Mr. Camah describes himself as an educator, part-time baller, and lifelong learner.
Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Camah moved to Massachusetts, where he attended Salem High School from 1993-96. He later received a scholarship to Providence College and the University of New Haven, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Camah also earned a Master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Special Education at Cambridge College.
Mr. Camah is entering his 19th year in urban education (second year at New Liberty Innovation School). He has held various classroom positions, teaching in the Boston Public Schools – mathematics to middle school students, English Language Arts at the high school level, and providing specialized instruction for students with disabilities.
In addition, Mr. Camah served as a teacher leader within a small learning community at Charlestown (MA) High School and as a Special Education Liaison, supervising (26) elementary and middle schools within the Boston Public Schools. Prior to coming to NLIS, Mr. Camah served as the Director of Special Education and Related Services at TechBoston Academy in Boston, overseeing the support for students with disabilities, developing/implementing Individualized Education Plans, supervising staff, leading program
development, and facilitating family engagement.
Most recently, Mr. Camah completed the Lynch Leadership Academy’s Principal Fellowship Program at Boston College for Aspiring and Sitting Principals. He was a member of Cohort XIII.
Mr. Camah is passionate about the mentorship of students, social justice, and advancing marginalized people and communities. His personal belief is that the most skilled educators possess the ability to unlock students’ truest potential and enable them to display their talents for all to see. He is committed to leading a school community that emphasizes and focuses on student-centered learning, self-advocacy, student agency, equity, and inclusion.
Mr. Camah and his wife, Michelle, live in Danvers, Mass., with their five children: Chanelle (24), Harper (12), Hayden (10) and twins Nathan and Ryan (18).
